Details
Cochineal extract is a natural color that provides a characteristic pink, red or purple color, demonstrating excellent thermal and light stability. Cochineal insects are soft-bodied, flat, oval-shaped insects native to tropical and subtropical South America and Mexico. They live in cacti, feeding the plant's moisture and nutrients. Carmanic acid is a substance found in high concentration in cochineal insects. It is extracted from the body of the insect and eggs and is mixed with aluminum or calcium salts to make carmine dye (also known as cochineal).
The words cochinine, cochinium extract, Carmine, Lake Crimson, Natural Red 4, C.I. 75470, E120 and even some "natural colorings" refer to a dye called "carminic acid", which is mainly used as a food coloring and in cosmetics.
